EU writes 18-page report on what you are allowed to laugh at
Someone once said that analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog. It’s messy, it stinks, and the frog dies. Well, the European Union isn’t letting that stop them! They’re literally trying to kill the frog—in this case, the meme frog Pepe—because, evidently, he’s part of the right-wing conspiracy to laugh and stuff.
The EU has released an 18-page paper entitled “It’s not funny anymore. Far-right extremists’ use of humour” and it is naturally not funny at all.
Here’s their take on Pepe:
The Pepe the Frog meme has been appropriated by far-right online activists. It symbolises “a kind of superior nonchalance toward others, helping to normalize hostile attitudes toward minorities and political opponents” as well as “a kind of anti-elite arrogance and condescension” ( 12). It has become the icon of the alt-right.
If you’re the only one not laughing, maybe you’re the butt of the joke.
Is the EU trying to emulate Zuckerberg in this satirical piece?
