Groups fighting the US opioid epidemic have called on Joe Biden to appoint a new head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after describing Janet Woodcock as unfit for the post due to her part in the mass prescribing of painkillers that have caused hundreds of thousands of deaths.

Woodcock, who has served as acting commissioner since Biden took office, has faced firm opposition on Capitol Hill for the job from lawmakers including Democrat Senator Joe Manchin, a key swing vote in the evenly divided chamber, the report said.
